Richard F. Tompkins
Dr. Tompkins' undergraduate and graduate degrees were conferred by Harvard University. His career includes more than 40 years of strategic planning, business planning, marketing, information systems, cost accounting, finance and management experience with industry specializations in health care, insurance, software, state and local governments, education, philanthropic and non-profit sector institutions.
He is currently the President of the First Chesapeake Group. The First Chesapeake Group provides services in strategic planning, litigation support, finance, budgeting, cost reduction, cost accounting and decision support, marketing, acquisitions, information systems, and human resources to hospital and healthcare, insurance, and software companies.
In prior professional experience he has served as:
- Advisor to the President and Board of Trustees at the Hospital of the Good Samaritan in Los Angeles assisting in all aspects of a hospital turnaround
- Vice President for Strategic Planning and Chief Information Officer at West Virginia University Hospital-HealthNet, responsible for strategic planning, mergers and acquisitions, information systems and management engineering
- Principal and Director of Arthur Young's Washington, DC healthcare consulting practice where clients included the Office of the Secretary of the US Department of Health and Human Services, Henry Ford Hospital, Good Samaritan Hospital of Phoenix, the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association, and numerous hospitals and healthcare institutions in the Virginia, Maryland, and DC area; also served as a member of Arthur Young's national healthcare committee
- Program Officer at the Cleveland Foundation, one of the nation's 20 largest grant making organizations, responsible for grant making to hospitals and healthcare organizations
- Consultant, regional perinatal program applications, for the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation
- Member of the panel on trends and projections for the study of nursing and nursing education, Institute of Medicine, National Academy of Science
- Research and Faculty Associate at Harvard University with teaching, research and administrative duties related to healthcare policy, healthcare finance, and educational finance
- Staff Assistant in the Office of the President at the University of Massachusetts responsible for healthcare educational programs, teaching hospital issues, liaison with state and private healthcare agencies
